May 6th - May 19th 2024

Local documentary photographer Simon King will take over the gallery space in Applecart Arts, showing a collection of photographs from his archive, and hosting talks and workshops. The exhibition will run from the 6th - 19th May.

There will be an evening viewing on Thursday, 9th May from 6-9pm.

On Saturday 11th May from 3pm there will be a talk/open discussion, on the theme “Photographing What’s Important”

Wednesday 15th May will see a photography workshop and walk in the local area. This will include some basic camera instruction, and theory. All skill levels welcome. Remember to dress sensibly, and bring some kind of camera, and yes if your phone has a camera it is a camera!

Those who attend the photo-walk on the 15th will be invited to share works they made in that time, which (time permitting) will be on display in the gallery space alongside Simon’s work for the final Saturday & Sunday (18 &19th May).

All events are open to all, and free to participate.

Simon is a documentary photographer, which means making images to serve a narrative purpose, storytelling with a beginning, middle, and end. Many of these stories are about communities; triumph, struggle, belonging. His recent work has included documentation of cultural and spiritual practices across London, but especially in the East of the city where he lives.

Simon works with black and white film, for the simplicity it brings to a description of action – his photographs are about things “happening” not prioritising aesthetic.

Simon teaches at UAL, and Leica Akademie, and often collaborates with the documentary collective he co-founded, New Exit Group.

You can find Simon’s work on Instagram @simonking_v & @newexitgroup.
